Caring for cast iron

Caring for your cast iron pan doesn't have to be a daunting task. Here are some simple tips to help you look after your pan.

After Each Use:

Cleaning: Rinse your cast iron skillet with hot water and scrub it with a brush or, even better, a chainmail scrubber. (Avoid harsh cleaning tools like steel wool, as they can strip the seasoning.)

Soap or no soap? It’s up to you! A little soap won’t hurt the seasoning, but many prefer to avoid it.
Dry Thoroughly: After rinsing, dry your skillet thoroughly. Moisture can cause rust, so use a towel to dry it, or briefly heat it on the stove to ensure it's completely moisture-free.

Oil After Use: Apply a very thin layer of oil to the pan after it’s dry to maintain the seasoning. Wipe off any excess oil with a paper towel.

Using Metal Tools:

Metal utensils are safe to use on cast iron cookware and can actually help remove any burnt food or stuck-on bits without damaging the seasoning. The skillet’s surface is tough and will hold up well to metal spatulas or scrapers.
The More You Use It, The Better It Gets:

Regular use improves the seasoning, creating a slicker surface over time. The key is to keep cooking and reapplying oil after each use to build up the protective layer.
Avoid These:

Don’t soak your cast iron in water for long periods.
Don’t put it in the dishwasher or leave it wet, as this will damage the seasoning and cause rust.
With proper care, your cast iron cookware will last a lifetime, becoming a trusted kitchen companion!
